00:05[Music] So these cells which have some nice..
00:09Good morning, everyone
00:14I hate to say it, but it's that time of year again
00:18It's getting extremely cold in the mornings in my apartment, so I brought out my heated blanket
00:23Today is officially the first day back at seminars for the fall semester
00:28Unlike in an undergraduate degree, where you have lectures probably every single day and a set schedule, as a grad student, I only have lectures once a week
00:35These seminars run Monday mornings for about two hours
00:38There's the student seminar series, where students in our department are assigned presentations once a year to discuss all of their research projects, and you have to give a big 20-minute presentation in front
00:49Of the entire department
00:51And then there are also keynote seminars, which I think are the cooler part of it, where every week we have an invited guest speaker, and they're usually from universities across North America
01:01Sometimes we fly out Harvard and Stanford professors, and they give a one-hour guest lecture on some sort of immunology topic
01:05Yeah
01:10As grad students, because a PhD is not course-based
01:14[music] We are research-based
01:16There's not nearly as many hours spent in classes and seminars
01:20[music] So that's why our base seminar hours are only on Monday mornings
01:23And then, if I choose to take elective courses, those would be extra courses that I wanted to add to my repertoire, like if I wanted to take a business course
01:31Of course, I could do that as well
01:33Those would be extra seminar or lecture hours
01:35And today, I'm extra excited because the guest speaker we have invited for the department is going to be talking about HIV in the context of immunology and viral reservoirs
01:45Some weeks they'll be discussing cancer immunology, T-cell immunology, but this week it's specific to HIV research
01:51So, I'm very excited to attend today
01:54And because Monday is the only lecture and seminar day, the rest of the week is up to each PhD student to set their own schedule for how they want to do their research
02:04So, my research hours this week will probably start at 12:00 p.m
02:06today after the seminars
02:08Not many people know that
02:10PhD students do get paid a base salary because we're meant to treat the PhD [music] as a full-time position or a full-time job
02:18So, I do get paid a salary to go to school, which I think is extremely cool
02:30[music] >> [music] >> That's hot
02:46[music] The immune system which are designed to last
03:23So, these cells, which harbor an integrated copy of the HIV genome within them, are called viral reservoirs or cellular reservoirs
03:30>> I just started this project a few months ago, so it's a pilot study
03:33So, basically, the question of my project is, okay, if those two groups achieve the same kind of [music] outcomes
04:08>> [music] >> I actually came [music] back a little while ago, and I was just relaxing on the couch for a little bit right after school, but I'm actually going to go and..
04:14[Music] Spider-Man now
04:20I think Spider-Man has been out for, what, a month and a half
04:25So I checked the theaters in the listings, and there's nobody at the theater booking that I want to go to tonight
04:31[Music] I think there's only two people, and they booked seats way at the very front
04:36So, it's going to be an interesting viewing experience
04:37I think we're going to have the whole theater to ourselves
04:41But I'm bringing a giant bag so that I can go snack shopping
04:45And I'm bringing water because I don't really like drinking soda
04:50Not a carbonated drink person unless it's once in a while
04:52And this is an old cup of coffee from this morning
05:07[Music] It is Tuesday, and Tuesdays are my work-from-home days
05:33Home days because my research is primarily dry lab now, and dry lab just means that I do mostly stats and coding, so I don't have any wet lab bench work to do
05:43I don't have to go in, and my supervisor is really chill; he doesn't really care where we are as long as we get our work done
05:48So, I choose to work from home on some days just to be alone and focused on my work
05:52This is my calendar for the week
05:54Luckily, I don't have any meetings impeding my day-to-day schedule, so I can really just focus on doing research
05:59I'm also going to be writing my weekly calendar into my Muji notebook right here
06:04This is the Muji weekly and monthly calendar
06:07I've talked about it a million times, but it's a weekly calendar on one side, with a blank page for a to-do list on the other
06:13Other side
06:18Some of you have asked me before, oh, is this weekly calendar then redundant if I'm just writing the exact same events from my monthly calendar here? And the answer is yes
06:24It's actually meant to be redundant
06:25Especially as a grad student, I have a lot of meetings and seminars that are one-offs, so they're not regular on a weekly basis
06:31It's not like I can memorize my schedule
06:33Sometimes I schedule meetings two months ahead of time
06:37And I like to use this notebook as an excuse to go through my week at the beginning of every week
06:43Usually, I do it on Sunday or Monday, but I forgot yesterday
06:46But usually, I go through my entire week, I write down my entire calendar and schedule so that I remind myself what classes and..
06:52Meetings I have this week
06:55And most of the days look fairly similar, but there are some days where I have a random dinner or a networking coffee chat here
07:01I have a lab meeting that happens once every three weeks, and it's coming up
07:08Those are things that I don't usually remember, so I write it all down
07:12It also helps that I have this side to write my to-do list, just so I have a list of things I can write down to get done throughout the day
07:25>> [music] [music] [music] >> Please, please, don't mind the hair
08:22Um, it's been a rough day, but it is a whopping [music] 4:30 now
08:27I think I'm going to call it a day here
08:29I've done enough
08:31But here's the [music] progress report on my work
08:33Okay, so I have R open
08:34I do
08:35All of my deep bioats and coding in R
08:36And I also have a document open for all of my statistical analysis plans
08:42I am using Cursor to help me write some of my code or brainstorm some of the statistics that I'm doing
08:48And this is what I've generated so far today
08:50So I have a few sections of my analysis done
08:55Different folders represent different topics that I'm trying to do bioats under
08:58So this number two folder has different output folders with different statistical analyses and different CSV files in it
09:06Anyways, all that is to say I did a lot of work
09:08My Google Tabs have about 20 tabs open, so I do have to go to a dinner in about an hour
09:18It's a dinner with my student association group
09:20So, it's paid
09:22For by the department, and I have chosen [music] to eat at a Japanese barbecue all-you-can-eat
09:27Of course, I love deciding the menu, so I've decided to go meat forward
09:32It's going to be a good night
09:34Usually, on work-from-home days, I lock in [music] quite easily, so I was working for like six hours straight, give or take, with lunch in between
09:40So, I think I'm done
09:42My brain is kind of tired
09:44[music] I'm going to end off my night by opening up this package that Paperlike sent me
09:49Great timing
09:53Anyway, I [music] love Paperlike
09:58I'm going to open this up with you guys
09:59If you don't know about Paperlike, I have been loving them since 2021
10:03If you've ever written on the glass screen of an iPad [music] before, you know that it's really..
10:06Slippery
10:09The Paperlike screen protector really makes it so that it feels a lot better to write on it
10:13As a grad student, I'm using my iPad to read scientific papers almost every single day
10:16So, because I invest so much time into my iPad, I also invested in the tools around it, including Paperlike
10:24The premium paper feel of Paperlike gives me that ideal friction and tactile feedback, making writing feel supernatural, like writing with a pen on paper
10:32And that's all because of the nano-dot technology that creates this perfect microtexture surface without compromising the screen quality
10:40I did change out my screen protector less than a month ago, so I'm not doing that today
10:44But if you would like to see me install my Paperlike 3 screen protector using the Butterfly application system, you [music] can check out my other video
10:51Instead, Paperlike was so kind to send me some other goodies to upgrade my iPad
10:56Like this was the case that I was using before
11:00It's [music] nice, but it's extremely heavy and bulky
11:01So, when I want to just run out quickly to the cafe or to the library, I'm actually using this Folio [music] case instead
11:08It's fully magnetic, and it's so lightweight and easy to throw into my bag
11:12I have also heard of other people saying [music] that the screen protector might ruin the Apple Pencil tip, but I've actually never found that to be the case
11:21Paperlike did send [music] me new pen tips
11:23But this is the original one, like the OG OG one from [music], the first time I ever bought my iPad
11:28I have not changed out my Apple Pencil tip ever
11:32[music] If I were to put them side by side, I genuinely don't see a difference
11:36I still write with [music], and it's never given me any problems
11:40So, make sure to try out Paperlike for yourself this coming school year
11:43You can use the link [music] in my description
11:44And once again, thank you so much to Paperlike for partnering with me
11:47You are making my student dreams come true
11:56>> But you know, if we don't find one, you will have to signal mode
12:02Sorry
12:28>> [music] >> I have a meeting in 1 hour, and I haven't [clears throat] been to the gym in maybe a month or so
12:40I've been really Slacking off the gym a lot these past few months
12:44I think I'm just getting burnt out on exercising at the gym
12:46I've been working out and lifting weights for seven years, eight years of my life
12:51But that's not an excuse because I know exercise is really good for me and my mental health
12:56So, there's no excuse not to go exercise
12:59This is my outfit
13:14I'm so cold
13:29Let's go out
13:36Research
13:42I do like coding and bioinformatics, but I primarily use my iPad for reading literature
13:49So, I'll download PDFs
13:59>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Um, let's sell pints
14:53Can I also try the pistachios? [music] [music] >> This looks so good
15:11Is it not right, or else? [music] [music] >> During welcome week? [music] No, we had pizza
15:37>> [music] >> My [music] The question is, do we need both? Can we just have one? [music] [music] The sunset is so pretty right now, but I have been working since 8:30 in the morning and it's now 6:20
16:08So, it's been a solid almost 10 hours with a little lunch break in between
16:16The reason why I was scrambling is because tomorrow I have a really, really big meeting with my research supervisor
16:22We haven't seen each other in almost [snorts] a month because he was away, I was away, and therefore I need lots of data to show him that I've been productive over the past month
16:33And I fear I've been slacking a little bit, just a bit
16:35Life got a little busy
16:37I'm pulling together all of my data into a nice little PowerPoint to show what I have been researching
16:44Doing, what progress I have been making
16:46Like, I'm going to take a break because my brain is going to short circuit now
16:51And I have more work to do
16:53Like, I'm actually not done yet
16:55It'll be a late night
16:56But I made sourdough today
16:57I haven't made sourdough in such a long time, and I started this batch in the morning
17:01I haven't made sourdough bread in a really long time, and I love eating homemade sourdough bread in the morning for breakfast
17:08I usually make two really big loaves
17:10I freeze away one loaf for myself and then I will probably gift another loaf
17:15And this is like my little love language
17:18Tomorrow, I'm going to a birthday party, and then on Saturday, I have a girls' night
17:21So I feel like I should just bring bread for..
17:25Everyone, we're going to make some bread together
17:26[music] [music] >> [music] >> Hello, everyone
17:59I just came back from the gym
18:00I want to make a quick dinner, then go shower and keep working
18:04[music] I do have more coding to do tonight, but I want to show you the dinner I'm making
18:09And I'm trying to eat a little healthier
18:11I [music] feel like I've been eating out so much these past couple of months
18:14I've just been hanging out with so many friends, which is a good [music] thing, but I haven't been consistently cooking at home, and it's really hard to eat healthily
18:22I'm going to roast some veggies in the air fryer, and I love using the air fryer
18:27I'm just going to do a little bit of oil on it
18:33It's like I'm doing a cooking show
18:38Fun! In fact, when I was younger, I would always pretend that I was in a cooking show because growing up, I watched like MasterChef and Chopped for dinner
18:44So, I would always watch these cooking shows and pretend that I was like Gordon Ramsay or something
18:47But in the air fryer go the veggies
18:50And then I also had some chicken thighs
18:51I saw this video online where you can cook chicken thighs on a cold stainless steel pan, and it like perfectly renders out the skin
19:00I can't remember the name of the creator, but I’ll probably put the video here
19:06Anyway, I really want to try making that because usually I cook chicken thighs in the air fryer without any oil, and it works out pretty well
19:14Well, but my air fryer is occupied right now
19:15[music] So, I thought it would be a good idea to try out a new cooking method
19:21So, [music] she said chicken thighs skin side down
19:24Okay
19:27And then I'm going to let [music] this pan heat up
19:29I put it to high
19:33The trick apparently is not to touch it, so I'm going to just leave it here
19:36Okay
19:40It's getting kind of loud, but I've left this here for 15 minutes now
19:43And look at all this oil
19:46It's kind of crazy
19:49The only downside to this is that, look at all of the oil, that's splattering out
19:52My floor is greasy right now
19:55There's just oil splattered everywhere, and I don't have an oil splash guard
19:58So, I'm just [music] dealing with this, and that's why I'm wearing gloves
20:02And then I let it cook for a little
20:05Bit more
20:09Okay, guys
20:12[music] Here's the dinner, and here's the aftermath
20:15All of this is what I need to clean [music] up later
20:17It's so greasy on my floor right now, it's crazy
20:20It's a little raw
20:23Give me a second
20:24Okay, we're back
20:26And now, [music] now it's finally cooked through
20:28It's good
20:32It's really good
20:36But was it worth the effort and the oil splatter [music] that I got everywhere? Like that? Um, [music] personally, no
20:43So, here's the thing
20:51I think this recipe is meant to be a little bit fancier—like if you were to cook a sauce with it afterwards [music], and you're serving dinner to other people, or you want to cook something really elaborate, then [music] this would have been a great thing
20:58Because I sat here for 30 minutes for this chicken to cook
21:00But usually I just throw chicken thighs in the air fryer for 20 minutes, and the skin crisps up
21:04It still renders the fat
21:08I can achieve the same thing, maybe even better, in the air fryer for less time
21:13And so, I'm going to give this recipe a pass, probably not for a regular meal prep night where I'm in a hurry and just want to make dinner
21:22This was a little bit too much, but that's okay
21:24It was still really yummy
21:26Okay, I'm going to eat dinner
21:28 >> [music] >> [music] >> Guys, I'm going to blast one of these candles
21:57 >> [music] It's going to be crazy
22:01All that is so soft
22:04I woke up at 7:00 a.m
22:27to bake this bread, and I figured out the perfect sourdough
22:30Schedules because sourdough does take a little bit of time, and I do have to stay home for it
22:36If I [music] start the dough the day before and then just let it rest overnight, I can bake it right in the morning before I go into the office or into the lab, and it just works out perfectly
22:43Cold butter and a little bit of salt
22:46And then I have another one
22:54So this is what I [music] cut out so far
22:56And I love sharing bread with other people because I can't store, like [music] two loaves of bread, and I'd rather just make bread more often
23:02I'm going into the lab soon to meet up with my PI for [music] the first time in about three weeks, and I have maybe 20 slides to give him
23:09All of them are new data, so I'm really hoping [music] he takes it easy and, you know, takes..
23:14Be easy on me
23:18I don't know
23:22Anytime I'm presenting new data, it's always so scary, because what is my PI going to say? Is the data going to be good enough? Is he going to be like, "Oh, you didn't do enough work
23:26This work's not good enough." He's never said any of that to me
23:29But either way, I'm going to pack him some bread just so that it can be like a little bribe, get him in a good mood
23:36And then I give him the data
23:38Honestly, that's the trick we do now with every lab meeting — kind of a joke, but not really
23:45Every single lab meeting, we always bring in a sweet treat, like someone will bake something or buy something from a bakery, just so that everyone's eating and happy, and when you're happy and in a good mood, it helps everything go smoothly
23:55The mood you’re not going to be super harsh at the lab meeting
23:57I forgot to actually explain what a lab meeting is
24:00So a lab meeting is a weekly meeting that I have with my lab every single week
24:05And the structure of the lab meeting is different with every single lab
24:09With our lab, one person presents each week, and you can choose to present new data or do a little journal club where you pick out a new paper that has been published recently and review it
24:21The whole idea is that, once a week, your lab gets together, and everyone gets to review your data, give you their thoughts and advice, and discuss how your next step analysis should go
24:30It's always super collaborative in science
24:33You're never just doing..
24:36Your own research
24:38The researchers always share with other people, and lab meetings are a really great chance for that
24:40This bread is just for the boss
24:42Please be nice to me
24:54I like my outfit
25:05Oh, that's so sad
25:13I packed him sourdough so I could get on his good side, and then I forgot to bring it
25:20>> It's in my house
25:36I hate myself
25:53[music] All right
26:10[music] [music] [music] >> [music] [music] >> Hey, [music] [singing] Happy birthday to you
26:26[cheering] [screaming] Anybody? [music] >> [music] [music] >> How's this leg? [music] >> [music]
