00:00Young consumers, I think, might look at putting their money in the Cash App instead of in a bank because of some of the other things they can do with it
00:09All right, welcome to The Drill Down Earnings, a quick look at the latest earnings from Block—don't you dare call it Square
00:15This is the business story behind the stock, and a move—shares of Block are moving
00:19I'm Futurum Group's Chief Market Strategist, Corey Johnson, with the story of Block earnings
00:23Would you dare call it Square? It still has the SQ ticker
00:28On Wall Street, they still look at SQ, and Wall Street still evaluates beats and misses
00:31And yes, this was a beat, but we want to understand the business behind this stock on the move
00:37So, here's what the business is actually about
00:38Numbers from Block, uh, $5.8 billion in revenues
00:42That's 24% over the last year and better than, uh, the analyst expectations for whatever that's worth
00:50And profits, actual net income from this company, net income of a 9% margin after years and years, and certainly quarters and quarters of losses for this company
01:00And if you dig a little bit deeper into the business beyond the headlines, what you see is a handful of businesses from this company
01:06Let's think about what they are, right? So we've got Square, we've got Cash App, we've got their pay-later program called Afterpay, and they're also selling Bitcoin
01:16We'll get back to that, but when you look at their businesses, they're doing really well in terms of..
01:22Topline numbers and gross profits: Cash App gross profits of $1.18 billion, up 25% year-over-year—a really big number
01:30Square gross profits are only gross profits, but still, $800 million—again, $828 million in the quarter, also up 18% from the previous year
01:40Now, CEO Jack Dorsey, who was sitting next to Beyoncé and Jay-Z at the Super Bowl; I hope you caught that
01:48Anyway, CEO Jack Dorsey is talking about how well Cash App has performed for the company
01:52In particular, we're going to get to that in a minute, but let's look at the stock charts first
01:57If you look at the reaction of the stock immediately after the earnings were announced, there was fantastic growth in the stock price right after the release, probably about 10%
02:05Right after the close of the market, but for the year, the stocks are pretty much flat
02:08But, uh, Block, here we go
02:11CEO Jack Dorsey—wait till you see his Block head, Square—uh, headshot
02:14It's a thing, I promise
02:16But, uh, he says direct deposit into Cash App in ways that sound like a bank but go beyond that
02:22FDIC insurance like a bank, but short-term credit through Borrow, paycheck distribution that is saving stocks and Bitcoin, and financial services like tax prep, investing, and of course P2P payments
02:33Here's Jack Dorsey
02:36We want to make sure that people see Cash App as reliable as, dependable as, something they trust—uh, their money with, and their full direct deposit of their paycheck with
02:45And trust is, uh, you know, the one input, but a big, uh, a big..
02:53A factor of that is the output, what can I actually do with it? Um, and the Cash App card has been one of our most successful products within Cash App
03:02It's extremely easy to get a card, it's very easy to personalize it, to use it, to change it, and to give it to family members
03:11So there's a lot that's attractive there
03:15There are some gaps that we're missing that traditional banks offer, which we do not, but really the road map is to fill those gaps and do so in an intuitive, well-designed way that feels fresh and benefits from technology to give time back to the customer
03:33As people see that, and as they use it and talk with their friends and family about it, that's the growth
03:40That's, that's how direct deposit, um, grows
03:42So, really, a modern way of looking at how, uh, young consumers, I think, might look at putting their money in the Cash App instead of in a bank because of some of the other things that they can do with it, with a focus on customer service
03:54Just starting to show up as net income and profits for, for Block
03:59All right, what does it all mean? The big drill on earnings, takeaway, and one number that tells us a whole lot
04:03I told you we get back to Bitcoin right after this

04:35Futurum Group, here’s your quick Drill Down earnings takeaway from Block, the company we're not calling Square anymore
04:42 All right, Block results—5.8 billion dollars in revenue, real strong growth, 24% year-over-year
04:47A lot of that was driven by Cash App, and the company posted decent profits for the first time ever
04:53I promise you, one number that tells us a whole lot—how about this: 44%
04:56There’s your number
04:58 44% of revenues for Block in the quarter came from the sale of Bitcoin
05:04An enormous amount of, uh, revenue for this company, even if not a lot of profits, but they said in their 10-K, which they filed today, that sales amounts received from our customers are recorded as revenue on a gross basis
05:14That's why I saw the big Bitcoin number from the company
05:17All right, thanks for listening to Drill Down Earnings
