00:00Hey everybody, an interesting call came in about Bitcoin to the Dave Ramsey show the other day
00:05Now Dave wasn't part of this video, but I want to go through this and I want to give you some insights that I don't think a lot of people understand, especially the people at Ramsey Solutions
00:13So, uh, without further ado, let's listen to this and I'm going to add some things to this
00:18All right, this is going to be pretty cool
00:20So, let's dive right in
00:24Um, so my husband and I are on different pages about using our investment that we have in crypto to pay off our mortgage
00:33>> Wow
00:33>> Now, he he does agree that >> real quick, the first thing I would have asked the caller is I need to know whose idea was it to buy Bitcoin in the first place
00:43Was it a joint decision? Was it yours? Was it his? because that's going to set the basis of why the wife thinks differently than the husband right off the bat
00:54>> That he would like to use it eventually, but he would like to wait for it because he believes it's going to grow exponentially and it's too volatile for me
01:03Um, and so I would rather pay it off now and have some peace of mind and then >> how much does he have in Bitcoin? Um, enough to pay off our mortgage plus them
01:18>> Wow
01:18So, we're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars
01:21>> Mhm
01:22>> What did he pay for all that Bitcoin? >> Um, that's part of the issue is I don't know exactly what his base price was, but he, you know, the the tax hit that we'll get on it
01:32So, um, part of my question today was, um, cuz I don't know if him and I will get on the same page right now, but if there's any, um, >> Okay, so let me stop real quick and just first off, you got to understand this lady doesn't even know what he paid for it, so she probably wasn't on board in the beginning or she, um, just didn't want to hear it, right? I see that all of the time
01:54I mean, even my own wife, you know, when I started buying crypto, I bought $10,000 worth in 2017 and it turned into a million bucks that year, right? It was an incredible crazy year
02:05And um that is the problem with a lot of husbands and wives because they're not on board together, right? Now, I pretty soon my answer is going to really thrill you
02:15Check this out
02:17>> Any strategies with uh the tax hit that we'll get? >> Is that what he's actually worried about? Um, well, he's worried about that and also he believes that it's going to keep growing
02:30Um, and so he'd rather wait for it to grow more
02:33So, he has to sell off less
02:35>> Then why? Okay, so this is a classic thing with a lot of of investors
02:37They want to wait for it to go up higher so they don't have to sell like let's say half to get a job done like pay taxes, pay off a mortgage
02:44Uh, let me break this down
02:46I'm not a financial or tax person
02:48All right? I'm not an, you know, adviser, but I do know how the IRS tax code works
02:53And if it's a a gain, a capital gain, when you go to sell it, you're going to pay 15% a fixed rate
02:58If you've owned it over a year, over a year, you'll pay that fixed rate as long as you make under I want to say it's close to 600,000 bucks
03:07If you go over $600,000, um uh you you pay 20%
03:10Right? Now, if you pay if you buy uh crypto and you buy it and sell it in less than a year's time, that actually gets converted and you pay taxes based on your ordinary income rate
03:23Okay? So, that could change wildly because if you're a millionaire, you're going to be paying like 36% fed and all kinds of state taxes, right? Depending on the state
03:32So, that's really easy to figure out
03:35Okay
03:36>> How would you ever sell it if it's going to in grow indefinitely? >> Cuz that means your tax bill is going to grow, too
03:43>> I know
03:43>> Now, this is absolutely crazy
03:43This is what um I really have an issue with Ramsey Solutions
03:47They don't get it
03:49Okay, your tax bill is going to grow
03:51No, it's actually going to grow only 15 to 20% based off of my cap gain
03:53And so this is one of those things where you're literally paying 15 or 20% on a dollar's gain
04:03That is exponential, right? This is just absolutely blows my mind
04:08And that's a thing that most investors do
04:10They fear the Fed
04:10They fear IRS and paying taxes
04:12I know what it's like to pay 50% taxes
04:14Um, but it's money I made and I got to keep the other half and grow it even more
04:21>> I I I I understand and I agree
04:24>> Here's the So, what is your What is your main goal here? Is your main goal to pay your house off or is your main goal to get out of that? That's your That's your main goal? that well my yeah that's what I thought this was for is to like um like if if we if we were successful at paying our house off with this investment >> that would mean like that would be sufficient for me
04:50>> Okay
04:50So I I I think that's the place to start because the Bitcoin is the is the proxy war here
04:56It's the third rail and it it what >> it's not really about the Bitcoin
05:01It's not really about the tax strategy
05:04>> He has a thing that's not yours that he's not including you on that was y'alls and now it's become his
05:08And >> all right, so here's the push back here, right? A lot of times there are a lot of spouses that just dig their heels in and they fight their spouse
05:16And the spouse is like, "Hey, I'd like to invest." And the other spouse like, "Oh, I'd like to paint the house." And the other spouse like, "Well, wait, we need to grow our money." The other spouse is we need to go on a vacation
05:25This happens all of the time
05:26and to sit there and this guy to come in and go, you know, start saying, "Oh, you got to do that because you know he it was your money, now it's not." It's like, you don't know the situation
05:35Why don't you get the guy on? You want to actually dig into some real stuff? Get the guy on and then let me ask I would love to the the actual two interviewers, the two gentlemen here to go, do you own any Bitcoin? Were you smart enough to buy it long time ago and it goes up? You know, it's like that's a big deal
05:51Like what if this guy had bought Bitcoin back in 2016 2015 and he's still holding on to it because he's seeing the long-term cycles
05:57He's understanding these things
05:59And that's what just blows my mind with a lot of people that give this advice
06:03The thing beneath the thing is I want I want to not have a mortgage
06:07I want to feel safety and security in my home
06:09So if you need to keep this precious thing, and by the way, I own zero Bitcoin, not one shred
06:14And do I wish I could go back in time and buy a whole bunch at nothing? Of course I do
06:17And I also didn't get into Beanie Babies and NFTTS and all these other things
06:22You throw enough darts backwards, one's going to hit great and it could go up a 5 trillion%
06:29And it could go to zero cuz it's always going to have to be traded for actual money at some point, right? But that's neither here nor there
06:35Just like your house
06:37And I want to remind you his boss Dave Ramsey says that home prices don't crash
06:40He's 100% wrong
06:40I got to start doing videos about that
06:44send me some links of videos where Dave Ramsey uh talked about how pricing doesn't change in homes
06:49They always go up over time
06:50I I have crypto friends
06:54I've got Bitcoin friends and dude, there is there's just that conversation is just a a ship that sailed
07:03The real conversation in your home is I want the peace and security of having a paidoff home
07:06If you don't want to use this, a we need to talk about our shared vision for what retirement looks like and our shared vision for the future, but I want us to come up with an a plan right now for how we're going to pay off the mortgage in one year, two year, 5 years, 10 years, etc
07:22Because all right, now here's my final answer, and this is the really big the crux of this
07:28First off, I think everyone should own a home cash
07:30I think it's financial bondage is a mortgage, but you have to start with a mortgage to get into a home
07:35Okay, Dave Ramsey has completely boink lost it
07:37He doesn't understand that the average person cannot pay rent in this nation and take time to save up to go pay cash for a house
07:43The guy is just boom
07:45So, this is what I would say
07:50First off, congratulations on tell your husband congratulations
07:52He just crushed it
07:54He made a bunch of profit
07:54Second, don't be afraid of the tax man paying a low rate and you could stagger these sales to keep it under
08:01Let's say you are making over 600 grand a year, which they probably are not
08:05Uh you could actually stagger your sales each year to stay under that and stay in that 15% fixed zone
08:1115% is the cheapest tax you're ever going to pay unless you're working at McDonald's
08:15And that's probably by choice
08:17And the thing is is you should pay off that house, but at the same time, you have to recognize that you made a good decision
08:23Now, the second good decision is going to be paying off that house
08:26But maybe it's not all at once
08:28Maybe it's an aggressive payment structure
08:30Why not teaching them about velocity banking? But they don't know this at Dave Ramsey's uh studios
08:34They don't know how to use a simple interest heliloc to pay down a uh a front-loaded amortized mortgage without one extra buck in about half the time
08:44But that's the thing
08:44But they got big because they told everyone to buy a house cash without a mortgage
08:51The economic ninja is out.
